2 Kings 12

1In Jehu's seventh year Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; his mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

2Jehoash did what was right in Yahweh's eyes during all his days that Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

3But the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense there.

4Jehoash said to the priests, "All money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of Yahweh, the money each man pays when passing the count, the money for persons according to their valuation, and all money that arises in any man's heart to bring into the house of Yahweh."

5Let the priests take it for themselves, each from his acquaintance, and they shall repair the breaches of the house for every breach found there.

6But in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had not repaired the breaches in the house.

7King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the priests and said to them, "Why are you not mending the breaches of the house? Now do not take silver from your acquaintances, but give it for the breaches of the house."

8The priests agreed not to take money from the people, nor to repair the breaches of the house.

9Jehoiada the priest took one chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of Yahweh, and the priests who kept the threshold put there all the money brought into the house of Yahweh.

10When they saw there was much money in the chest, the king's scribe and the high priest came up, tied it into bundles, and counted the money found in Yahweh's house.

11They gave the weighed money into the hands of those doing the work, the appointed overseers of Yahweh's house, and they delivered it to the woodworkers and the builders laboring on Yahweh's house.

12and to the masons and stonecutters, for buying timber and hewn stones to repair the breaches in the house of Yahweh, and for everything spent on the house to strengthen it.

13But no silver cups, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, or any vessels of gold or silver were made for Yahweh's house from the money brought into the house of Yahweh.

14For they gave it to those doing the work and repaired Yahweh's house with it.

15They did not require an account from the men into whose hands they delivered the money to give to those doing the work, for they performed faithfully.

16The money from guilt offerings and the money from sin offerings was not brought into the house of Yahweh; it belonged to the priests.

17Then Hazael, king of Syria, went up, fought against Gath, and captured it; Hazael set his face to go up against Jerusalem.

18Jehoash king of Judah took all the consecrated things that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, along with his own consecrated things and all the gold found in the treasuries of Yahweh's house and the king's house, and sent them to Hazael king of Aram, who then withdrew from Jerusalem.

19The rest of Joash’s deeds, and everything he accomplished, are they not recorded in the book of the annals of Judah’s kings?

20His servants rose up, formed a conspiracy, and struck Joash in the house of Millo on the descent to Silla.

21Jozacar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer, his servants, struck him, and he died; they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
