Obadiah 1
Vision of Obadiah. Thus says Lord Yahweh concerning Edom: We have heard a report from Yahweh, and a messenger has been sent among the nations, "Arise, and let us rise against her in battle."
See, I have made you least among the nations; you are utterly despised.
Your heart's pride has deluded you, you who dwell in the rock's crevices, whose high seat is his, who says in his heart, "Who will bring me down to earth?"
Though you exalt yourself as high as an eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down, says Yahweh.
If thieves came to you, if plunderers by night—how destroyed you are!—would they not steal only till they had enough? If vintagers came to you, would they not leave gleanings?
How they search Esau! How they seek his hiding places!
All your covenant allies have driven you to the border. Your peaceful companions have misled you and overpowered you. Those who eat your bread set a snare beneath you. He has no understanding.
In that day, declares Yahweh, will I not destroy the wise from Edom and understanding from the mountain of Esau?
Teman, your champions will be terrified so that everyone from Esau's mountain is cut off by slaughter.
For the violence against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.
On the day you stood aloof, when strangers took his forces captive and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you too were like one of them.
Do not look on your brother in the day of his estrangement, nor rejoice over the sons of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast with your mouth in the day of distress.
Do not enter the gate of my people in the day of their calamity, nor look on his affliction in the day of his calamity—not even you—nor lay hands on his wealth in the day of his calamity.
Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives, nor hand over his survivors in the day of distress.
For the day of Yahweh is near upon all the nations: as you have done, it will be done to you; your recompense will return upon your own head.
For as you drank on my holy mountain, all the nations will drink continually; indeed, they will drink, swallow it down, and be as if they had never been.
But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy; the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.
The house of Jacob will be fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble. They will kindle upon them and consume them, leaving no survivor for the house of Esau. For Yahweh has spoken.
The people of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, the people of the lowland the Philistines; they will possess the field of Ephraim and the field of Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.
The exiles of this host of Israel's children who are among the Canaanites will possess as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.
Saviors will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau, and the kingdom will be Yahweh's.
