Haggai 1

1In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, Yahweh's word came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak the high priest, saying.

2Thus says Yahweh of hosts: This people say, "The time has not come, the time for Yahweh's house to be built."

3Then the word of Yahweh came through Haggai the prophet, saying,

4Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?

5Now therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts: Set your hearts on your ways.

6You have sown much but brought in little; you eat, but find no satisfaction; you drink, but gain no fullness; you clothe yourselves, but derive no warmth; and whoever earns wages earns them into a pierced bag.

7Thus says Yahweh of hosts: Set your hearts on your ways.

8Ascend the mountain, bring timber, and construct the house; I will delight in it and be honored, says Yahweh.

9You expected abundance, yet it turned to little; you brought it to the house, but I blew it away. Why? declares Yahweh of Hosts. Because my house, which lies waste, receives no care, while you hurry, each man to his own house.

10Therefore because of you the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its produce.

11I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on whatever the ground produces, on humans, on livestock, and on all the toil of hands.

12Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak the high priest, and all the remnant of the people obeyed the voice of Yahweh their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as Yahweh their God had sent him, and the people feared before Yahweh.

13Haggai, Yahweh's messenger, spoke Yahweh's message to the people: "I am with you," declares Yahweh.

14Yahweh roused the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people, and they came and performed the work in the house of Yahweh of hosts, their God.

15On the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
