Ecclesiastes 6

1There is an affliction I have seen under the sun, and it is great upon humanity.

2A man whom God gives riches, wealth, and honor—so that nothing lacks for his appetite from all he desires—yet God does not empower him to eat any of it, for a foreigner consumes it; this is vanity and a grievous affliction.

3If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years abound, but his soul finds no satisfaction in good, and he has no burial either, I declare the miscarriage better than he.

4For it comes in vanity and departs in darkness, and its name is covered in darkness.

5Moreover, it has not seen the sun nor known anything—this has rest rather than that.

6Even if he lives a thousand years twice and sees no good, do not all go to one place?

7All man's toil is for his mouth, yet the appetite is not satisfied.

8For what advantage does the wise man have over the fool? What does the poor man gain who knows how to walk before the living?

9The sight of the eyes is better than the wandering of the appetite; this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

10Whatever has been was named already, and it is known that he is man; nor can he contend with one mightier than himself.

11For there are many words that increase vanity. What is better for man?

12For who knows what is good for a person in life, the number of days of his futile life that he passes like a shadow? Who can tell a person what will be after him under the sun?
