Verses are chosen for the question being asked. Scripture on this site is quoted from the Lumin Translation, the same text as the public reader and the iPhone Bible tab: Lumin’s own translation, drafted with AI from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, checked verse by verse against them, and approved by Lumin. Glosses in answers are original summaries, not a second Bible. Open the named passage; AI is not the interpreter. [How we cite Scripture](https://www.lumin.faith/about#how-we-cite)

God sometimes spoke through dreams in the Bible, to Joseph, Pharaoh, Daniel, and another Joseph in Matthew. Scripture also says most dreams are ordinary, that a dream can mislead, and that God has now spoken fully through his Son. Christians differ on how often God uses dreams today. They agree that no dream carries the authority of Scripture, and that any dream should be tested by God’s word.

## Reflection

Dreams can feel enormous when you wake up, especially strange or frightening ones. The Bible does record God speaking in dreams, and it never treats that as impossible. But notice how it handles them. Joseph says interpreting is not in him. Daniel says no magician can do it, only God. Jeremiah contrasts a dreamer’s story with the plain word of the Lord, and calls one straw and the other grain. Ecclesiastes adds a dry warning that many dreams mean many empty words.

So hold dreams loosely and Scripture tightly. Most dreams come from the day, the body, and the mind working through what you carry. If a dream stirs you to pray, repent, or love someone, that is good fruit, whatever its source. If it tells you something that contradicts Scripture, pushes you toward fear, or asks you to follow anyone other than Christ, Deuteronomy 13 says not to listen, even if part of it seems to come true. Dream dictionaries and symbol charts are not in the Bible. Talk to a mature believer before acting on a dream.

## One next step

Read Jeremiah 23:25-29 and Hebrews 1:1-2. If a dream is troubling you, pray about it, then share it with a pastor or trusted believer before acting.

## FAQ

### Does God speak through dreams today?

Christians differ. The Bible shows God speaking in dreams (Genesis 41; Matthew 1:20) and Acts 2:17 mentions dreams in the last days. Scripture also says God has spoken fully through his Son (Hebrews 1:1-2). Any dream must be tested by Scripture and never treated as equal to it.

### How do I know if a dream is from God?

Test it. A dream that contradicts Scripture or leads you away from Christ is not from God (Deuteronomy 13:1-3). Ask whether it moves you toward prayer, love, and obedience, and talk it over with a mature believer. Most dreams are ordinary (Ecclesiastes 5:7).

### Is dream interpretation biblical?

Joseph and Daniel interpreted dreams, but both said the interpretation came from God, not from a method (Genesis 41:16; Daniel 2:27-28). Dream dictionaries and symbol charts are not found in Scripture. Be cautious of anyone who claims a system for decoding dreams.

### What does the Bible say about bad dreams or nightmares?

Scripture does not explain nightmares, but it invites you to bring fear to God. Psalm 4:8 says, “In peace I will lie down and sleep at once, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.” Pray before sleep, and talk to a doctor if nightmares are frequent or follow a trauma.
