Verses are chosen for the question being asked. Scripture on this site is quoted from the Lumin Translation, the same text as the public reader and the iPhone Bible tab: Lumin’s own translation, drafted with AI from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, checked verse by verse against them, and approved by Lumin. Glosses in answers are original summaries, not a second Bible. Open the named passage; AI is not the interpreter. [How we cite Scripture](https://www.lumin.faith/about#how-we-cite)

The Bible does not command or forbid cremation. Burial was the normal practice for Israel and the early church, and Scripture tells many burial stories, from Abraham’s cave to Jesus’ tomb. But no verse makes burial a condition of salvation or of the resurrection. God made Adam from dust and promises to raise the dead, whether they lie in a grave, were lost at sea, or were burned. Christians differ on which practice best honors the body, and both choices can be made in faith.

## Highlighted verse

> So it is with the resurrection of the dead. It is sown perishable; it is raised imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If a natural body exists, a spiritual one exists too.

> — 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 (Lumin Translation)

## Reflection

Christians buried their dead for centuries, partly because Jesus was buried and partly as a witness: we lay the body down like a seed, expecting it to be raised. That is why some churches still prefer burial, and why the Catholic Church allows cremation but asks that ashes be kept in a sacred place rather than scattered. Other Christians see cremation as a simple, affordable choice. Scripture records the men of Jabesh burning Saul’s body and then honoring his bones, and it never treats that as a loss of hope.

The resurrection does not depend on what is left of us. Martyrs were burned and saints were lost at sea, and Revelation says the sea will give up its dead. The God who made Adam from dust can raise his people from ashes. If you are planning for yourself or for someone you love, the better questions are about honor, family, cost, and how your church walks with the grieving. And if you are carrying ashes or regret right now, you can grieve with hope.

## One next step

Read 1 Corinthians 15:35-44 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. If a funeral decision is in front of you, talk it through with your family and a pastor before you decide.

## FAQ

### Is cremation a sin?

No verse calls cremation a sin. Burial was the normal practice in Scripture and the early church, but the Bible gives no command about how a body must be laid to rest. Many Christians choose cremation in good conscience; others prefer burial as a witness to the resurrection.

### Can a cremated person be resurrected?

Yes. The resurrection depends on God’s power, not on what remains of a body. God formed Adam from dust (Genesis 2:7), and Revelation 20:13 says even the sea gives up its dead. Martyrs who were burned share the same hope (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).

### What does the Catholic Church teach about cremation?

The Catholic Church permits cremation as long as it is not chosen to deny the resurrection. Its 2016 instruction asks that ashes be kept in a sacred place, such as a cemetery, rather than scattered or kept at home.

### Is it wrong to scatter ashes?

Scripture does not address scattering ashes. Some traditions, including the Catholic Church, ask that ashes be buried or placed in a cemetery. Others leave it to the family. Talk it through with your family and pastor, and choose what honors the person and your hope in Christ.
