# What does the Bible say about superintelligence?

> The Bible never mentions superintelligence, and a new name does not change what a technology is. In September 2026 a U.S. executive order told federal agencies to call artificial intelligence “Super Intelligence,” or SI. Scripture gives the same frame for either name. Only God knows all things and his understanding has no limit; human wisdom, however vast, is still creaturely. Anything people make, however capable, is a tool to steward, not a mind to fear or to worship. Christians can welcome real goods, name real risks, and keep their trust in God rather than in any machine.

## The U.S. government renamed AI. The technology stayed the same.

On September 29, 2026, Executive Order 14434, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” directed the executive branch to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI.” It was published in the Federal Register on October 2. The order applies to federal agencies’ own documents, websites, and reports, and covers the same technologies the law already calls artificial intelligence. It does not change regulations or contracts, and it does not tell companies or the public what to say. Some technology companies embraced the term, others kept saying AI, and California told its own agencies to keep the old name.

In the technology industry, superintelligence has usually meant something else: a hypothetical future system that would outthink people in nearly every field. Today’s chatbots and image tools are not that, and no one knows whether such a system will ever be built. Whatever the name, Scripture sets every intelligence we make beside the One who made us. Psalm 147:5 in the Lumin Translation: “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding is beyond measure.”

Some builders speak openly of making a god-like mind, and some Christians answer that every AI project is Babel. Neither extreme holds. People were made to build, and the sin at Babel was not the bricks but the aim: a name for ourselves and a reach into heaven on our own terms. A system can be very capable and still be a tool. It becomes an idol when people give it the trust, worship, or hope that belong to God.

## Only God knows all things. Everything else is made.

These passages do not mention computers. They answer the questions people are really asking about superintelligence.

### God’s understanding has no limit.

**Psalm 147:5** — However much a machine can compute, it is finite and made. Only God’s understanding is beyond measure.

### God’s thoughts are higher than ours.

**Isaiah 55:8-9** — The distance between God and people is not a gap that more data closes. It is the difference between Creator and creature.

### Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.

**Proverbs 9:10** — Scripture separates wisdom from raw knowledge. A system can hold vast information and still not fear God, love a neighbor, or know what is good.

### Babel wanted a name.

**Genesis 11:4-9** — The builders sought fame and a reach into heaven. The sin was the aim, not the tool. Ask of any project: whose name is it for, and whom does it serve?

### An idol is a made thing asked to save.

**Isaiah 44:17** — Isaiah mocks the man who carves wood and prays, “Save me, for you are my god!” Hoping a machine will save us repeats that old mistake.

### All the treasures of wisdom are in Christ.

**Colossians 2:2-3** — Christians do not look for ultimate wisdom in a new intelligence. Paul says it is hidden in Christ, and it is offered freely.

## Hold the name lightly. Hold the truth firmly.

The new word shows up in headlines, at work, and in sermons. Here is how to think about it.

### A news story or agency now says “SI” instead of “AI”

**Same tools, new name.** The order renamed the category for federal use. The chatbots and models it covers are the ones people already use, with the same strengths and limits.

### Someone says superintelligence will soon know everything

**Only God is all-knowing.** Even a far more capable system would be finite, made, and dependent. Omniscience belongs to God alone (Psalm 147:5).

### A company says its AI will solve death, war, or the need for God

**That is the tower.** Salvation and eternal life are God’s gifts in Christ. A product that promises them asks for faith it cannot repay.

### You work on AI and wonder whether that is wrong

**A faithful vocation is possible.** Build honestly, tell the truth about what a system can do, and speak up when a project harms people. Making tools is part of the calling God gave.

### The news about superintelligence makes you afraid

**Take risks seriously, not fearfully.** Christians can support wise limits and still sleep. God rules over every power, and Jesus said not to be alarmed (Matthew 24:6).

### An AI answer about God sounds smarter than your pastor

**Open the passage.** Fluency is not authority. Check the verse, ask your church, and let Scripture judge the answer, not the other way around.

## Common questions

### What does the Bible say about superintelligence?

The Bible never mentions superintelligence or AI. It does say that only God’s understanding is beyond measure (Psalm 147:5), that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10), and that nothing people make deserves the trust that belongs to God.

### What is Super Intelligence (SI)?

Since September 2026 it is the U.S. federal government’s name for artificial intelligence. Executive Order 14434 told federal agencies to say “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “AI.” In the technology industry, superintelligence has usually meant a hypothetical future system that outthinks people in nearly every field.

### Is superintelligence the same as AI?

In federal usage, yes: the order covers the same technologies the law already calls artificial intelligence. In the industry’s older sense, no: superintelligence meant a future system far beyond today’s tools, which may never exist.

### Is superintelligence a sin?

A name is not a sin, and building powerful tools is not a sin by itself. It becomes sin when people treat a system as God: trusting it to save, obeying it as a moral authority, or seeking glory that belongs to God.

### Could superintelligence become God?

No. God is the uncreated Creator who knows all things and gives life and breath to everything (Acts 17:24-25). Anything people build, however capable, is a creature’s work: finite, dependent, and made.

### Is superintelligence in Revelation or the end times?

Revelation does not mention AI or superintelligence. Christians differ on how to read its images, but none of the historic readings needs a machine to make sense of the text. Jesus’ instruction is to watch and not be alarmed.

### Should Christians be afraid of superintelligence?

Christians can take AI’s risks seriously without fear. Scripture calls for wisdom, justice, and care for neighbors, and it places every power, including the ones we build, under God.

### Does Lumin call itself super intelligence?

No. Lumin is a Bible companion that uses AI and cites Scripture you can open. AI assists; it does not replace Scripture, pastors, or the church, and it will not speak as God.
