26. While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities beside the banks of the Arnon for three hundred years—why did you not rescue them during that time?
27. I have not sinned against you, but you wrong me by fighting against me; may Yahweh the Judge arbitrate today between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
28. But the king of the Ammonites did not heed the words of Jephthah that he sent him.
29. The Spirit of Yahweh came upon Jephthah, and he went through Gilead and Manasseh, went through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead advanced against the Ammonites.
30. Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh and said, "If you surely deliver the sons of Ammon into my hand,
31. Then whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon shall belong to Yahweh, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.

34. Jephthah came to Mizpah, to his house, and there his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and dances; she alone was his child, for he had no son or daughter besides her.
35. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Ah, my daughter! You have brought me low indeed, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I cannot turn back.”
36. She said to him, "My father, you opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to what came from your mouth, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance against your enemies, the sons of Ammon."
37. She said to her father, "Let this matter be done for me: release me for two months, so I may go and descend upon the mountains and weep over my virginity, I and my friends."
38. He said, “Go,” and sent her away for two months; she and her companions went and wept for her virginity on the mountains.
39. After two months she returned to her father, and he carried out toward her the vow he had made. She had known no man, and it became a custom in Israel.
40. Year by year the daughters of Israel went to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days each year.
