13. So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that were more than enough for those who had eaten.
14. Therefore, when the people saw the sign he performed, they said, "This is truly the prophet who comes into the world."
15. Jesus therefore realized that they were about to come seize him to make him king, and withdrew again to the mountain by himself alone.
16. As evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.
17. They boarded the boat and set out across the sea toward Capernaum. Darkness had already come, and Jesus had not yet arrived to them.
18. And the sea was rising, a great wind blowing.

22. The next day the crowd standing on the other side of the sea saw that no other boat was there except one, and that Jesus had not gone into the boat with his disciples, but his disciples had departed alone.
23. But boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24. When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves boarded the small boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25. And when they found him beyond the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
26. Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I tell you, you seek me not because you saw signs, but because you ate from the loaves and were satisfied."
27. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for God the Father has sealed him.
28. So they asked him, “What should we do to perform the works of God?”
29. Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one whom he sent.”
30. They said therefore to him, "What sign do you do, then, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?"
31. Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32. So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.”
33. For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
34. So they said to him, "Lord, always give us this bread."
35. Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never hunger, and the one who believes in me will never thirst."
36. But I said to you that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.
37. Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out.
38. Because I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
39. This is the will of the one who sent me, that I lose none of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
40. For this is my Father's will, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
41. So the Jews grumbled about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."
42. And they said, "Isn't this Jesus, Joseph's son, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say that he has come down from heaven?"
43. Jesus answered them and said, "Do not murmur among yourselves."
44. No one can come to me if the Father who sent me does not draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.
45. It is written in the prophets: "All will be taught by God." Everyone who has heard from the Father and learned comes to me.
46. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
47. Truly, truly, I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
48. I am the bread of life.
49. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.
50. This is the bread coming down from heaven, so anyone may eat of it and not die.
51. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.
52. The Jews therefore argued with one another, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
53. Jesus therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life within yourselves."
54. The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
55. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56. The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
57. As the living Father sent me, and I live through the Father, so the one who eats me—he too will live through me.
58. This is the bread that came down from heaven—not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.
59. He said these things while teaching in the Capernaum synagogue.
60. Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard, said, "This word is hard—who can hear it?"
61. But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?”
62. Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?
63. It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64. But there are some among you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they are who do not believe, and who it is who would betray him.
65. And he said, “This is why I have said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been given to him from the Father.”
66. After this many of his disciples went back and no longer walked with him.
67. Jesus therefore said to the twelve, "You do not also want to go away, do you?"
68. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life."
69. And we have believed and come to know that you are the Holy One of God.
70. Jesus answered them, "Didn't I choose you twelve, and one of you is a devil?"
71. Now he referred to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, for this one was about to betray him, one of the twelve.
