48. If we let him go on like this, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.
49. But a certain one of them, Caiaphas the high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing."
50. Nor do you reckon that it profits you for one man to die for the people, and the whole nation not perish.
51. He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation.
52. And not only for the nation, but that he might also gather into one the children of God who were dispersed.
53. So from that day they plotted to kill him.
54. Jesus therefore no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but withdrew from there into the countryside near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.
55. Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the countryside to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.
56. So they were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that he will not come to the feast at all?"
57. Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandments that if anyone knew where he is, he should inform them, so they might arrest him.
