1. Thus says Yahweh: Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak this word there.
2. Say, "Hear the word of Yahweh, king of Judah who sits on David's throne—you, your servants, and your people who enter these gates."
3. Thus says Yahweh: Do justice and righteousness, and rescue the plundered from the oppressor's hand—do not wrong or harm the sojourner, the orphan, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.
4. For if you indeed do this, kings sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, will enter the gates of this house—he, his servants, and his people.
5. But if you do not listen to these words, by myself I have sworn, declares Yahweh, that this house will become a desolation.
6. For thus declares Yahweh concerning Judah's royal house: To me you are Gilead, the peak of Lebanon; yet I will set you as a wilderness, cities no one inhabits.
7. I will appoint destroyers against you, each man with his weapons; they will cut down your choicest cedars and hurl them into the fire.
8. Many nations will pass by this city, and they will say, each man to his neighbor, "Why has Yahweh done so to this great city?"
9. They will answer, “Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God, bowed down to other gods, and served them.”
10. Do not weep for the dead, nor mourn him; weep bitterly for the one who departs, for he will not return anymore, nor see the land of his birth.
11. For thus says Yahweh concerning Shallum son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned in place of Josiah his father and departed from this place: He will not return there anymore.
12. For he will die in the place where they exiled him, and he will see this land no more.
13. Woe to him who builds his house without righteousness and his upper chambers without justice, who makes his neighbor serve for nothing and gives him nothing for his work.
14. who says, “I will build myself a house of broad dimensions and spacious upper chambers, and carve out its windows, paneled with cedar and smeared with vermilion.”
15. Do you reign because you strive in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, and carry out justice and righteousness? Then it was good for him.
16. He judged the plea of the afflicted and needy; then it was well. Wasn't this knowing me? declares Yahweh.
17. For your eyes and your heart are set only on your covetousness, on shedding innocent blood, on oppression, and on violence, to carry them out.
18. Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: They will not mourn for him, "Ah, my brother!" or "Ah, sister!" They will not mourn for him, "Ah, lord!" or "Ah, his glory!"
19. He will be buried with a donkey's burial, dragged away and thrown beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
20. Ascend to Lebanon and cry out; raise your voice in Bashan, and cry from Abarim, for all your lovers lie broken.
21. I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, "I will not listen." This has been your way from your youth, that you did not heed my voice.
22. The wind will shepherd all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity; surely then you will be ashamed and humiliated because of all your evil.
23. Dweller in Lebanon who nests among the cedars, how pitiable you will be when pangs come upon you, pains like those of a woman giving birth.
24. As I live, declares Yahweh, even if Coniah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a signet on my right hand, I would pull you off from there.
25. And I will deliver you into the hands of those seeking your life, into the hands of those you fear, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hands of the Chaldeans.
26. I will hurl you and your mother who bore you into another land where you were not born; there you will die.
27. To the land to which they lift their soul to return there, there they will not return.
28. Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol? Is he a vessel in which no one delights? Why were they cast out, he and his offspring, and hurled onto a land they do not know?
29. Earth, earth, earth, hear Yahweh's word.
30. Thus says Yahweh: Write this man childless—a man who will not succeed in his days—for no man from his offspring will succeed, none sitting on David's throne and ruling any longer in Judah.
