1. If someone slain is found in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you to possess, lying in the field, and it is not known who struck him,
2. Your elders and judges will go out and measure toward the cities surrounding the slain one.
3. And it will be the city nearest to the slain man whose elders take a heifer of the herd that has not been worked in her and that has not drawn under a yoke.
4. The elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a rough valley which is neither tilled nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley.
5. The priests, sons of Levi, shall draw near, for Yahweh your God has chosen them to serve him and to bless in Yahweh's name, and according to their word every dispute and every plague shall be settled.
6. All the elders of that city who are nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer with its neck broken in the valley.
7. They answer, saying, "Our hands have not poured out this blood, nor have our eyes seen it."
8. Yahweh, atone for your people Israel whom you redeemed, and do not put innocent blood among your people Israel; the blood shall be atoned for them.
9. You shall purge the innocent blood from your midst when you do what is right in the eyes of Yahweh.
10. When you go out to war against your enemies, and Yahweh your God delivers them into your hands, and you carry away their captives,
11. You see a woman of beautiful form among the captives and desire her and take her to be your wife.
12. You shall bring her into your house, and she shall shave her head and trim her nails.
13. She shall remove her captive clothing from herself, live in your house, and mourn her father and her mother for a full month; after that you shall go to her, marry her, and she will be your wife.
14. And it shall be, if you do not delight in her, then you shall send her away as she pleases; you shall not sell her for money, nor make merchandise of her, because you have humbled her.
15. When a man has two wives, one loved and the other hated, and they bear him sons, both the loved and the hated, then the firstborn son belongs to the hated one.
16. When he bequeaths to his sons on that day what he has, he shall not be able to treat the son of the beloved as firstborn before the firstborn son of the hated.
17. He shall acknowledge as firstborn the son of the hated one by granting him double the portion of everything he possesses; for he is the first of his strength—the firstborn's right belongs to him.
18. If a man has a rebellious and disobedient son who refuses to heed his father’s voice or his mother’s voice, and though they discipline him, he will not listen to them;
19. His father and mother shall seize him and bring him out to the elders of his city and to the gate of his place.
20. They shall say to the elders of his city, "This son of ours is rebellious and disobedient; he does not heed our voice—he is a glutton and a drunkard."
21. All the men of his city shall stone him with stones until he dies; you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear and fear.
22. If a man commits a sin for which the judgment is death and he is put to death, you hang him on a tree.
23. His body shall not remain overnight on the tree, for you must bury him that same day, since anyone hanged bears God's curse, so you do not pollute your ground, which Yahweh your God gives you as an inheritance.
