# Is it wrong to listen to AI sermons?

> No, not by itself. Listening to a real sermon read or translated by an AI voice, posted by the preacher’s own ministry and labeled as AI, is not a sin. The trouble is a fake sermon that uses a well-known preacher’s cloned voice to say things he never said. It bears false witness about a real man, and sharing it spreads that false witness. The same tools can be used to fake a pastor’s voice and ask church members for money. Check where a sermon came from, test it against Scripture, and keep listening to real preachers in a real church.

## A cloned voice can fool the ear. It cannot fake the Shepherd.

John 10:4-5 in the Lumin Translation: “Once he has put all his own outside, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, since they know his voice. They will by no means follow a stranger; instead they will run from him, because they do not know strangers’ voices.” Jesus is speaking of himself, the good shepherd. He is not promising that your ear will catch a cloned voice. His sheep know his voice because they belong to him (John 10:14), and hearing it often in Scripture is how they come to know it well. That is also how they notice when a sermon sounds wrong.

The fakes are already common. In 2025, Protestia reported on a YouTube channel called John MacArthur World that posted sermons in an AI imitation of MacArthur’s voice, with no tie to him or to Grace to You, the ministry that distributes his sermons. A second channel, Voddie Baucham World, posted more than 100 videos in under two months, including one that endorsed women preaching, a view Baucham had long opposed. Both men have since died, MacArthur in July 2025 and Baucham in September 2025. Billy Graham died in 2018, yet Lutheran pastor Joshua Pauling wrote in Mere Orthodoxy about a fake Graham sermon that passed half a million views in a few weeks and asked viewers to “share your thoughts in the comments below.”

Before you trust or share a sermon video, check a few things. Is it on the ministry’s own channel or site? Does the channel’s history make sense, or did it post dozens of sermons in a few weeks? Is there a date and a place? Do the lips drift, or does the voice sound flat? Look for an AI label, though a missing one proves nothing. Would that preacher really say this? Open every verse it quotes, and keep hearing the word preached in a real church.

## Borrowed voices, false witness, and how to listen well.

No verse mentions voice cloning. These passages show what is wrong with a fake sermon, and how God’s people are meant to listen.

### No false witness.

**Exodus 20:16** — A fake sermon says a real man preached what he never preached. Making it is false witness. Sharing it, even in good faith, carries it further.

### Stolen words, false authority.

**Jeremiah 23:30-32** — God opposed prophets who stole his words from one another and claimed to speak for him, though he had not sent them. A fake sermon lies about who is speaking, even when its words are true.

### A disguise is an old trick.

**2 Corinthians 11:13-15** — Paul warned of false apostles disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. A cloned voice is a new form of that disguise: a message dressed in a voice you already trust.

### Look at the fruit.

**Matthew 7:15-16** — False prophets wear sheep’s clothing, Jesus says, and are recognized by their fruits. A familiar voice is only clothing. Look at the fruit: clickbait, pleas for money, teaching the preacher never held.

### Test it, even when it is real.

**Acts 17:11** — The Bereans welcomed Paul’s preaching eagerly and still checked the Scriptures daily. Testing may not reveal who made a video, but it shows whether what you heard is true.

### The thief comes to steal.

**John 10:10-11** — Jesus contrasts the thief, who comes to steal, kill, and destroy, with the good shepherd, who lays down his life for the sheep. Pastors are meant to follow him. A real one will not text you for gift cards or crypto.

## From your feed to your phone.

Most AI sermon questions land somewhere on this list. The test is the source, the truth, and who is asking for what.

### A real sermon read or translated by an AI voice, posted by the preacher’s own ministry and labeled as AI

**Can be fine.** The words are his, the source is his ministry, and the label is honest. Test it against the text like any sermon.

### A “new” sermon from a famous preacher who has died, on a channel you do not know

**Doubt it until you find the source.** If it mentions anything after his death, it is not his. Find it in his ministry’s archive, and remember him by what he preached (Hebrews 13:7).

### A famous preacher’s voice teaching something he opposed his whole life

**Do not share it.** That is what a fake does: new words in a trusted voice. Preachers do change their minds, but find the source before you believe it.

### A voice message, call, or video from “your pastor” asking for gift cards, crypto, or an urgent gift

**Do not pay or reply.** Call your pastor or the church office on a number you already know. Then let the church warn everyone else.

### An AI preacher video that openly says it is AI

**Honest, but not a pastor.** A label is honest. But a generated teacher has no church, no accountability, and no life you can watch. Do not let it replace your church.

### Your own pastor used AI to help prepare Sunday’s sermon

**Ask, do not assume.** Organizing study with a tool is not preaching a generated script. If it troubles you, ask kindly. The guide on AI sermon writing says more.

## Common questions

### Is it wrong to listen to AI sermons?

Not by itself. A real sermon read by an AI voice and labeled by the preacher’s own ministry is fine to hear. A fake that puts new words in his mouth is a lie, and sharing it spreads the lie.

### Are AI sermons on YouTube real?

It depends. A real sermon in an AI voice, posted by the preacher’s ministry, is still his. A new script in his cloned voice is a fake. An AI preacher that says it is AI is honest, but it has no church and no one to answer to.

### Are the Billy Graham, John MacArthur, and Voddie Baucham sermons on YouTube real?

Many are real recordings, but a familiar voice alone proves nothing, and look-alike channels have posted AI imitations of all three. Billy Graham died in 2018, John MacArthur in July 2025, and Voddie Baucham in September 2025, so a sermon that mentions later events is not theirs. Start with each ministry’s own channel or site, and treat the rest as unverified.

### How can you tell if a sermon is AI?

You may not hear the difference, so start with the source. If it is not on the ministry’s own channel or site, treat it as unverified. Then check the date and place, and open every verse it quotes.

### Is it a sin to share a sermon clip I’m not sure is real?

It can be. Exodus 23:1 says, “Do not spread a false report.” An unchecked clip can spread one about a real preacher, so if you are not sure, wait. If you shared a fake in good faith, that is not lying, but delete it and say so.

### What if the AI sermon teaches something true?

True words are still true, and God can use them. But a true sentence under a false name still lies about who said it. Take what helped you to your Bible and your church.

### Can scammers clone my pastor’s voice?

Yes. Scammers can copy a pastor’s voice from public sermons. If a message in your pastor’s voice asks for gift cards, crypto, or a quick, quiet gift, do not reply or pay. Call the church on a number you already know.

### How do I report a fake sermon channel?

Use the report option on the video or channel, and choose impersonation if it is offered. Tell the preacher’s church or ministry too. Do not comment on it or share it, even to complain.

### Is Lumin an AI preacher?

No. Lumin is a Bible companion that answers with Scripture you can open. It uses AI to turn a real sermon you recorded or imported into a digest. It does not preach, clone anyone’s voice, or speak as Jesus, a pastor, or God.
