The list is not in the Bible. Proverbs 6:16-19 names seven things detestable to Yahweh, a different list, and Paul names the deeds of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21.

Christian tradition, not Scripture. Origin: Church tradition: Evagrius Ponticus listed eight evil thoughts in the fourth century, and Gregory the Great set the list at seven in the sixth.

## What the Bible says instead

> There are six things Yahweh hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that hurry to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who stirs up conflict among brothers.

> Now the deeds of the flesh are plain to see: sexual immorality, uncleanness, sensuality, idol worship, sorcery, hatreds, conflict, jealousy, fits of temper, rivalries, divisions, factions, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other things like them. I am telling you in advance, just as I told you before, that people who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
