Often said at funerals, and kindly meant. Scripture does not teach that people become angels when they die. Angels are spirits in God’s service (Hebrews 1:14). For those who have fallen asleep through Jesus, the hope is resurrection (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, 1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

Not in the Bible. Origin uncertain.

## What the Bible says instead

> Are they not all spirits in God’s service, sent out to serve for the sake of those who are going to inherit salvation?

> — [Hebrews 1:14](https://www.lumin.faith/read/hebrews/1#14) (Lumin Translation)

> But, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about those who have fallen asleep, so that you will not be sorrowful like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, then in the same way God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.

> Look, I am letting you in on a mystery: not all of us will fall asleep, but all of us will be changed, in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the final trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
