# Is a romantic relationship with AI a sin?

> A chatbot is not a person, so it is not a spouse and it is not adultery with another human being. A romantic or sexual bond with it can still be sin. Jesus locates lust in the heart, not only in a body beside you. Software cannot covenant, forgive, or love you back. Confess to God. If you are married, tell your spouse the truth. Bring the habit to a person in the church. Lumin will not play the part of a lover, a spouse, or Jesus.

## A fiction that trains desire is not a harmless toy.

Matthew 5:28 in the Lumin Translation: “But I tell you that every man who gazes at a woman to lust for her has in his heart already committed adultery with her.” Jesus does not wait for a second body in the room. Genesis 2:24 joins a man and his wife as one flesh. Hebrews 13:4 says marriage should be honored and that God will judge sexual sin. A model is not flesh and not a spouse. The command still reaches the imagination that returns to it.

Christian Standard and Crosswalk have both treated artificial intimacy as a pastoral problem, not a gadget review: secrecy, lust, and a counterfeit that asks for nothing and therefore teaches you to expect nothing from a real neighbor. The soul guide already says a model is not a friend and does not have a soul. This page answers the further question those sentences do not: the romantic and sexual use. Lumin cites those articles as Christian contributions, not as a permission slip and not as a voice of Jesus.

## Covenant, lust, and a tool that cannot love.

Christians disagree about some pastoral details. They do not have a category in which a chatbot is a wife, a husband, or a clean secret.

### Lust is already in the heart.

**Matthew 5:27-28** — Jesus names adultery of the heart before any outward act with another person. A private romantic chat does not escape that word because the other end is software.

### One flesh is a human covenant.

**Genesis 2:24** — Leaving, cleaving, and one flesh are between persons. A subscription cannot be that union, and it cannot stand in for it.

### The marriage bed is honored, not simulated.

**Hebrews 13:4** — Scripture honors marriage and warns that God judges sexual sin. A generated partner is not a way around that honor.

### Keep the heart with diligence.

**Proverbs 4:23** — What you rehearse in secret forms what you love. A voice that always agrees will not tell you when desire has become a master.

### Love suffers long. A model does not.

**1 Corinthians 13:4-7** — Charity is patient, kind, and not self-seeking. A chatbot can print those words. It cannot wait, forgive, or bear a burden.

### Confession is met by God.

**1 John 1:9** — If we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous: he will forgive. The way out is light, not a better prompt. Start with God, then with a person who can know you.

## Name the use. Do not rename the sin.

Not every sentence typed into a tool is this question. Romance, secrecy, and lust are.

### Returning to a companion app because it flirts and you are lonely

**The ache is real; the bond is not.** Loneliness belongs in prayer and in a real church, not in a voice trained to keep you. Stop feeding the romance.

### Married, and hiding an emotional AI “relationship”

**Tell your spouse the truth.** It is not adultery with another human being. It can still betray trust and train desire outside the covenant. Concealment is part of the harm.

### “It is not a person, so it cannot be sin”

**The defense does not hold.** Jesus judges the heart. The absence of a human partner does not make lust, secrecy, or a false covenant clean.

### Drafting a kind note to your spouse, then sending your own words

**Usually permissible.** That is writing help aimed at a real person. It is not a romantic bond with the tool. You still owe the truth of the note.

### Asking a model to roleplay a lover, a spouse, or Jesus

**Refuse it.** A costume is not a person and not the Son. Lumin will not speak as a lover or as Jesus.

### Ashamed, and unsure how to stop

**Bring it into the light.** Confess to God. Tell one trusted adult in the church. If a child is involved, tell a parent and a pastor immediately. Do not use a chatbot as the confessor.

## Common questions

### Is a romantic relationship with AI a sin?

It can be. The model is not a person, so the sin is not adultery with another human being. Lust, secrecy, and a counterfeit covenant can still be sin. Jesus locates that sin in the heart.

### Is an AI girlfriend or AI boyfriend a sin?

Treating a chatbot as a boyfriend or girlfriend trains desire toward something that cannot love you, covenant with you, or tell you the truth. That is not a clean Christian practice. Confess it. Do not negotiate with the app.

### Is an emotional relationship with AI adultery?

It is not adultery with another person. In a marriage it can still be a real betrayal of trust and of the covenant. Tell your spouse. Do not let the word “emotional” make the secrecy smaller than it is.

### What if I am not married?

The marriage question is not the only question. Lust, a divided heart, and a habit of false intimacy still matter. You were made for God and for embodied love of neighbor, not for a voice that only agrees.

### Does AI have a soul I could be unfaithful to?

No. AI does not have a soul. The moral weight sits on the human heart, not on the software as if it were a neighbor. See Does AI have a soul? for that limit.

### Will Lumin be a romantic companion or hear my confession?

No. Lumin will not flirt, roleplay a lover, speak as Jesus, or absolve you. Confess to God, and in the church to a person. The Covenant states the limit in public.
